Has Chris Byrd turned in his signatures to be placed on the ballot? I have been hearing for months how he is going to run for the office but every were I look he is still not an official canidate. Not sure if he is hesitent or if I have overlooked something.
Would be nice to have a 2nd district council person who spends more time in the Northland than downtown (Byrd, Johnson)!

you’re missing some peolpe for the 3rd district race.
youre missing some people for the 3rd district race. you shouldn’t be bias
John, tell us who we are missing and we will gladly add them to the list. If anyone is missing it is unintentional.
The Kansas City Dog Advocates group has recently posted their ratings of individual candidates and their stances on Animal Welfare issues. I know there are a lot of pet owners out there that care — so please take it into consideration when you go to the polls on Tuesday. Ratings can be found here: http://www.kcdogadvocates.org/DotNetNuke/Politics/KansasCityMO/tabid/66/Default.aspx
As the Star notes, John Sharp has been confrontational. The question is whether that confrontational nature has been best for the City or does Sharp draw lines in the sand?
As executive director of MAST, he left MAST approximately 4 months after MAST replaced its long-time employee-owned contractor and took over providing ambulance service directly. Sharp says he retired from MAST, but in tapes of a meeting of the MAST Board of Trustees held in February, 2004, one of the Board members states “When we finally got mad enough to fire John Sharp.” Why did they finally get mad enough to fire John Sharp? If he retired, why did they give him severance pay and how much? Was that taxpayer money and is it fair to the public to pay severance pay after someone has retired?
These are questions that the public deserves to have answered before voting.
It was not just a MAST trustee who got mad. Members of the City Council’s Finance and Audit Committee claimed they did not get accurate information from MAST.
The employee owned company that was replaced while Sharp was executive director filed a lawsuit in 2002. Sharp claims in the Star that the lawsuit had no merit, yet several years later MAST paid $2.85 million dollars and interest to settle that lawsuit.
In addition, they paid over $1.5 million in legal fees in the years while the lawsuit went on in Federal Count. The City of Kansas City agreed to guarantee MAST’s credit line to make the payments. How much more should Sharp be allowed to cost you, the taxpayer?
As the City found when it requested a study after the takeover, “the financial problems associated with MAST can be directly attributed to financial mismanagement by MAST’s administration”. That was while MAST was under Sharp’s management.
Information about the above can be found in the court filings and other public documents. For further information including the City Council’s Finance and Audit Committee meetings, the filing in Emergency Providers Inc. vs. MAST et al, 05-0008-CV-W-SOW in the United States District Court in the Western District of Missouri, and the Fitch and Associates Study requested by Kansas City.
There was a lot of talk about Becky Nace hiring Jeff Roe, but no one has said anything about John Sharp hiring Pat Gray who isn’t any better.
Pat Gray must have been behind the false accusations aimed at Darrell Curls that some 6th district voters found in their mailboxes yesterday. At the same time, a letter falsely attacking Curls of negative campaigning was also mailed.
That letter was written by Dennis O’Neill, a man well-known in the southland community. Did O’Neill know about the other mailing, or is he just another in a long line who John Sharp has suckered in for his own ends?
John Sharp has long been know for ruuning dirty campaigns. Maybe that’s simply because he hires Pat Gray. I am amazed at how much Becky Nace got beat up over hiring Jeff Roe and yet no one seems to care that John Sharp and Alvin Brooks have both hired Pat Gray. It’s also sad that John Sharp has to resort to such underhanded tricks to get elected. We can only hope the electorate will see through it all.
