MU School of Medicine moving to Kansas City ? ?
September 22, 2003 |
Breaking news… The University of Missouri System’s Board of Curators is having at least some discussion about moving all or part of the Columbia campus’s medical school to Kansas City. While surprising, there may be some rational for such a move - the UM System has been broadsided by the state budget crisis, University Hospital in Columbia is bleeding money, and UMKC has long sought to beef up its own medical school and life sciences research. One question, what becomes of University Hospital? Does it downsize and remain in Columbia, or does it try to break into the already crowded KC hospital market??
Columbia Daily Tribune story.
Statement from UM System President Elson Floyd.

Update: The Columbia Missourian reports that the issue was raised by leaders in Kansas City. It’s looking less like a serious proposal and more like a play to garner attention for UMKC’s School of Medicine and the campus’s need for addtional life sciences research money.
