The Evolution of Westport

WestportThe long-established tension between residents and clubs in the Westport area seems to be coming to a crossroads of late. Landlords and neighbors want to return the area to it’s residential and shopping roots, at the expense of some of the bigger clubs and bars. Property owners have joined together for a new development plan focusing on expanded rental and condo housing, and fewer mega-clubs.

One option worth discussion: move the clubs Downtown?

Anyone who has been to Westport on a summer Saturday night knows that the neighborhood simply isn’t big enough to handle the crowds attracted to places like XO, Have A Nice Day, America’s Pub, etc. Recently Mayor Barnes and other supporters of Downtown have been working on a plan to build a new arena inside the Loop, to be financed with income from a new downtown entertainment and shopping district. This could be a perfect opportunity to move the bigger Westport clubs to a new Downtown club district. It would give the heart of the city much-needed nighttime vitality, and return Westport to a shopping and dinning area with smaller neighborhood bars.
