Main Street U.S.A.

While the lofts, art galleries, and restauraunts make Downtown KCMO the hottest spot in the metro area lately, we also have a surprising number of smaller downtown and main street areas scattered throughout our suburban sprawl. Besides the usual suspects like Brookside, Westport, and Waldo in southern KCMO, many suburbs still retain their original town centers…

  • Independence, MO Square – Harry Truman, the pioneer trails, and an emerging restuarant scene.
  • North Kansas City, MO – Northtown’s Armour Rd. is a classic Main Street with shops and restaurants.
  • Lee’s Summit, MO – shops and train depot.
  • Parkville, MO – gourmet restaurants, antiques, brewery, college, and rivefront park.
  • Liberty, MO – Jesse James, courthouse square, restaurants, and antiques
  • Weston, MO – antebellum Missouri River port with antiques, restaurants, and a great Irish pub.
  • Mission, KS – Johnson Drive boasts a genuine hardware store, movie theater, butcher, etc.
  • Overland Park, KS – Shops and farmers market in the heart of Johnson County’s sprawl.
  • Excelsior Springs, MO – home of the historic Elms Hotel and the Hall of Waters spa.

Wow, I always thought downtown Overland Park meant the office parks on College Boulevard. I had no idea that there was a real town center in all of that sprawl.

North Kansas City is awesome. It’s like a perfect small town in the middle of a big city. It’s great to be able to walk from my home to the drugstore, restaurants, and work. I’ve also always liked the Independence Square. I hope the renovations continue to go well, becaue it would make a great entertainment district out in the suburbs.
