U.S. Rep. Karen McCarthy now has two challengers for the Democratic nomination. Her recent disclosure and treatment for alcoholism, as well as chronic staff turnover in her office, have left an impression of vulnerability. Midtowner McCarthy is popular in the 5th district that includes most of solidly democratic Jackson County, so it will be interesting to see how the voters react.

I’m surprised that people in her own party are so eager to challenge her. She has done a good job representing the city, and alcoholism is not uncommon in the high stress environment in Congress. Let’s give McCarthy another two-year term to see if she stays sober and continues to do her job. If not, then we can replace her.
