Channel 9 leaving downtown
November 4, 2003 |
ABC affiliate KMBC-TV 9 has decided to abandon Downtown in favor of a surburban office park in southeast KCMO - Winchester Business Park near 63rd Street and I-435. This leaves no television stations within the business loop, and means that Midtown stations WDAF-TV 4 and KCPT-TV 19 will be the only stations in the urban core. Interesting timing as it comes just as channel 9 aired a heavily promoted report on the revitalization of Downtown and the many people moving back in to the area.

Thank you for your note. Over the course of several months, we looked
closely at all available downtown properties before selecting the site in
Winchester Office Park. Unfortunately we were unable to identify a
downtown site that is both financially viable and fully satisfies out
unique needs. Among other things, we require a site that provides a
line-of-site microwave path to our transmission tower (located just north
of I-70 between downtown and the stadium complex), access to multiple
fiber-optic cable sources, secure parking for our news vehicles and on-site
landing rights for our news helicopter. Each of those requirements posed
problems downtown.
While we anticipate completing a move out of downtown over the next couple
of years, we have chosen to remain within Kansas City, MO. This, in spite
of the fact that the State of Kansas offers certain tax advantages to
broadcast operations and proposed attractive incentives for us to locate
across the state line.
Wayne Godsey, KMBC-TV 9 General Manager
