MoDOT blue ribbon report

November 5, 2003 |

State of DisrepairThe “blue ribbon” panel studying the Missouri Department of Transportation has released it’s final report. The report recommends a public apology for the 1992 Plan debacle, several internal auditing and organizational changes, tolls on new and revamped highways (i.e. I-70), and a more public role for the Transportation Commission. Local representation was provided by former Kansas City mayor Rev. Emanuel Cleaver and Lee’s Summit mayor Karen Messerli.

One key argument is that since MoDOT abandoned the 1992 Plan in 1998, the state has been frozen in time. Four years later we are still bitching about a program that was ill-planned by a Republican administration and poorly implemented by a Democratic one. There is plenty of blame to be spread across the politcal spectrum, but so far very little leadership to move forward. The bottom line is that we need to forget about it and move on to address today’s needs, not those from ten years ago.
