Recycling program revised and ready to go
November 14, 2003 |
RecycleFirst, Kansas City, MO’s new curb-side recycling program appears ready to roll after several months of revisions. Originally planned to begin in September 2003, it is now scheduled to start a phased implemenation in March 2004. 40 neighborhoods will be involved in the first phase. Changes to the program include free recycling bins, two free trash bags per week, $1 per extra bag, and continued free bulky item pickup.

It sucks that they won’t take glass, even in a separate container. For my family we throw out as much glass as anything…
The Recycling Centers will still take glass of all colors; it’s just not cost-effective for them to pick it up curbside. This is part of what kept the cost of the new program down.
I also think that glass should be picked up at the curb. Many other cities manage to do it. It could be set out in a second container if it’s really a problem mixing it with the other recyclables. If money is really an issue then offer it as an optional extra charge. I’m sure many peopel would gladly pay and extra couple dollars a month to have glass picked up, maybe even people that aren’t currently taking it to the drop-off centers.
I’m a resident of Birmingham, Alabama and I’m interested in starting a neighbor-
hood recycling program. I would appreciate any information on your program that
you can share such as the good, the bad and the ugly of organizing and motiva-
ing neighbors and talking to the companies that will take the recyclable pro-
ducts.
