Dueling jobs plans
December 30, 2003 |
Last week the Democrats struck first with Governor Holden’s $200 million Jobs Now plan to create research development districts, funded by closing tax loopholes and moving around existing revenue. Yesterday the Republican’s struck back with a $190 million plan to upgrade research facilities and create spinoff jobs across the University of Missouri System, including $43 million for a new research building at UMKC’s Hospital Hill campus.
The sudden attention on life sciences will certainly please the folks at the Stowers Institute for Research, where officials are threatening to expand outside of Missouri if the state government doesn’t invest more money in research and higher education. Both proposals sound promising, it looks like both sides are jockeying for position in the upcoming legislative session and November 2004 election.
