Gay rights in Missouri

Looks like Missouri voters will be deciding on a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage this year. A proposed amendent is likely to sail through the Republican-controlled General Assembly and end up on a ballot later this year. State statutes already ban same-sex marriages and prohibit recognition of marriages from other states. Meanwhile, Kansas City’s city council recently extended health benefits to unmarried partners of city employees. Four cities currently have non-discrimination ordinances – Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia, and University City (suburban St. Louis). In 2003, Kansas City and Jackson County joined St. Louis in offering domestic partner registries.
