2007 Mayor’s race

Kansas City LogoApparently it’s not too early to begin speculating on candidates for mayor of Kansas City, MO in 2007. Today’s Star has a piece by Steve Kraske on Katheryn Shields, the current Jackson County Executive. While Shields has won three times by wide margins, her tenure has seen bitter political fighting with the County Legislature and recently with the County Prosecutor. There have also been several management problems with tax collections, jail construction, and other issues. Most recently there are federal investigations into spending the county’s COMBAT anti-drug tax.

Another very likely candidate is current City Councilmember Becky Nace, who has focused on fiscal responsibility, infrastructure repair, and basic city services. Also likely are current council members Jim Rowland, Terry Riley, and Troy Nash, plus former council member and neighborhood activist Aggie Stackhaus.
