Dirty air
April 22, 2004 |
A new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council rates three regional electric companies as having some of the most polluting power plants in the country. Topeka’s Westar Energy is the second worst in the country. Here in Kansas City, KCP&L ranks ninth and Aquila (formerly UtiliCorp/MoPub) ranks thirteenth. The timing of the report isn’t good for the local utilities…. The metro area is likely to fall out of compliance with federal air pollution limits later this year. Plus, KCP&L wants to build two new coal plants near Weston. Aquila wants to build one near Harrisonville, shortly after selling off a new plant nearby in Pleasant Hill.
