Union Station closing?

April 29, 2004 |

Two sources are reporting on the impending demise of Union Station, which is suffering from attendance way below original incorrect estimates and is losing millions of dollars a year.

Johnson County Sun chairman Steve Rose claims that the station’s board of directors are considering closing the station, and have already gone as far as taking bids for the lumber to literally board up the windows. Meanwhile, KCTV 5’s Dave Helling reports that the station’s owners are considering asking Kansas City, MO to vote on a property tax increase to offset Union Station’s operating deficit.

Union Station is also being considered for part of the proposed Bistate II tax, but unfortunately that plan is collapsing under the weight of criticism from suburban mayors, a secretive decision making process, and a “me too” money grab from all over the metro area.

Of course Union Station is broke. Anyone who reviewed the original projection knew it would happen. The original supporters knew it would go broke. They found a whore who could with a straight project obvious bogus revenue amounts and lied to the voters. Its time the Chambers of Commerce, the politicians, business leaders and foundations took the lead and fund this from their own money. They were the ones who lied to us. It is their responsibility to make it right.
