May 27, 2004 |
Today is the 10th anniversary of casino gambling in Missouri. The Star has an history and analysis of the industry: gamblers lost $1.2 billion last year; casinos paid $363 million in taxes, mostly to schools; casino taxes are the state’s 5th largest source of revenue; local benefits have included a new city hall in Riverside, streets, sidewalks, a library, and a community center in North Kansas City, demolition of dangerous buildings a new riverfront park in Kansas City.
The casino industry has a glossy brochure commemorating the anniversary, while Casino Watch continues its opposition and tries to maintain the $500 loss limit. One item missing from the history of the riverboat era, Speaker of the Missouri House Representatives, Bob Griffin, losing his job after a gambling-related bribery and corruption scandal.
