Just gay enough
June 20, 2004 |
Pitch editor C.J.Janovy’s latest column calls out the Missouri Democratic Party on it’s almost total abandonment of it’s gay and lesbian constituents on the gay marriage issue. It’s a good idea, but for some reason Janovy focuses most of her criticism on Attorney General Jay Nixon, including this photo of Nixon as The Village People.
There are no comments (even anonymous) from gay or lesbian Democrats, or any groups like KC’s Four Freedoms Democratic Club. Comments from a single legislator fail to illustrate the growing gulf between the party’s leadership and membership, on this issue and others. Janovy calls the Republicans “pathetic little pussies,” but fails to mention how the Democratic leadership spent the last three years eagerly bending over for Catherine Hanaway and her strap-on.

Personally, I haven’t been that impressed by a lot of the Pitch’s articles. They bring up good points, then fail to back any of it up with anything more than their own speculation. I’ve come to read it that way, an opinion paper with entertaining and occasionally thought-provoking stories. In my opinion, it often appears to be little more than a printed and money-backed blog in that aspect.
Ironically, with the Republicans so “out” on this issue there is little room for politics. From the President on down, it seems as if Republicans have pretty much given away the gay vote. Democrats don’t need to court gay voters because the other side has done all their work for them. It’s unspoken, defacto politics . . . real politics at its best. It’s as if the Democrats are saying “Go ahead, vote Republican, stay home, or vote Nader. We know you wont” to voters hung up on the gay marriage issue.
I like the take The Pitch uses because it’s basically playing the naive, babe in the woods routine and crying . . . bitching at business as usual. Good read, great fun, stating the obvious and claiming discovery. Also, The Pitch has a surprisingly good list of used cars.
Awesome post. Great pic!
Peace,

Good point Travis. The Pitch does seem to be trying to find stories that aren’t picked up by the Star or local TV, but a lot of the time they don’t develop the story enough.
