Audit finds charter school problems
August 26, 2004 |
Missouri State Auditor Claire McCaskill’s new audit of charter schools in Kansas City and St. Louis finds several problems in complying with state law. Half of the 26 schools failed to meet requirments for teacher licensing, while 6 schools failed conduct independent financial audits. Lax oversight from the charter school sponsors was also cited as being a big problem, with half of the sponsors only providing minimal supervision. This audit did not look at the academic performance of the charter schools, but so far most test results have not shown much improvement over regular public schools.
