The historic Empire Theater may be in trouble again. DST wants to tear down the 1921 vaudeville theater to build a new headquarters for Kansas City Power & Light Company, which is currently located nearby in the 1201 Walnut building. At the moment, the Empire is slated to be include in the Power and Light Live entertainment district, as a live music venue. The theater has long been talked about as a potential House of Blues venue. Fortunately, City Manager Wayne Cauthen is at least somewhat reluctant to build new office space when Downtown vacancy rates are already very high.
