Brush Creek flood guageLast night the region had one of it’s worst rainstorms in years, with widespread flash flooding in Midtown KCMO and eastern KCK. Up to 8 inches of rain was dumped on the Turner area of KCK and northeastern Johnson County, right onto the Turkey Creek and Brush Creek watersheds. There were several road closures and evacuations along Southwest Boulevard. Other closures hit the Broadway Extension near the Downtown Airport, Ward Parkway near Brush Creek, I-35, and I-635. Brush Creek on the Plaza was turned into a raging whitewater rapid, rising 10 feet in 20 minutes and just barely staying within its banks. The Kansas City Fire Department performed dozens of water rescues as emergency services were pushed close to the limit. Fortunately, large flood control projects built over the last ten years seemed to keep the damage to a minimum.
