Cleaver goes negative

September 30, 2004 |

Yesterday Emanuel Cleaver held a press conference with Dick Gephardt and launched a new TV ad slamming Jeanne Patterson for Cerner Corp.’s offshoring of jobs to India (Patterson is a former Cerner exec. and is married to the company’s founder and CEO). Patterson replied by saying that only a handful of Cerner jobs are in India, compared with 3500 in Missouri. She also put out a new TV ad slamming city budget problems during Cleaver’s time as mayor.

Cleaver must be worried about the Lloch Lloyd housewife spending her personal fortune in the campaign. He has a huge advantage in name recognition in a mostly Democratic 5th District, and managed to avoid negative ads in a nasty primary fight with Jamie Metzl.

As a Cerner employee, I can tell you that the number of workers in India right now is a small amount compared to the future plans of Neal and co. Those workers that have been hired as “phase 1″ testers are all trained software engineers. The minute that they show enough competence in software engineering will be the moment that Cerner’s engineering is shipped off to the subcontinent, leaving Cerner execs here to spend their time collecting more profits and living it up in KC’s strip clubs. Consider this: Cerner has plans to increase its workforce by another 5000 in the next 5 years. However, the only plan on the table for any new facilities in North KC campus is a hotel. You decide what that means.

Get out of Cerner! I pray that Cleaver wins!
