Stowers Institute gets into Missouri stem cell debate

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has jumped into Missouri’s debate over stem cell research. The institute is planning an expansion for their rapidly growing Plaza-area campus, but will not build in Missouri if the state passes a ban on stem cell research. State Senator Matt Bartle, R-Lee’s Summit, is the primary instigater in this attempt to force an extremist position on the state’s scientific community. While Bartle acknowledges a ban is unlikely, the outcome of the governor’s race will be important in this issue. At Stowers’ urging, the city’s Economic Development Corp. has voted unanimously to lobby against any stem cell research ban.
