Kansas 3rd District analysis
November 11, 2004 | 2 Comments
Local Republican blogger Timothy Burger has some good analysis on Kris Kobach’s loss to Dennis Moore. Moore’s hold on the third district is a constant thorn in the side of Kansas Republicans, with the party alternating between conservative and moderate candidates without success. They also tried a redistricting to move some of the liberal stronghold of Douglas county out of the district. This time it was the conservatives’ turn, and the more moderate inner suburbs trumped the conservative exurbs to give Moore his first victory in Johnson County.

The Republicans need to give up the idea that winning Johnson County is their god-given right. As the county grows and becomes more urban, it will continue to trend towards the moderates and eventually even more Democrats.
The loss would have been even worse if they hadn’t succeeded in splitting Lawrence. What’s next? Moving Wyco out of the district?
The Republicans need to win Johnson Couny because it is one of the most conservative counties in the entire country. Normally, the sad fact of the elections is that Johnson County, the area that pays all of the taxes, doesn’t have a say in the outcome of the election, as Wyandotte and Douglas vote in the Democrat. This time, however, the selection was unanimous, speaking both to the GOP divide and the overall wekaness of the Kobach campaign.
Anyways, the need for unity is now more apparent than ever. Check us out at http://www.firedennismoore.blogspot.com
