The KCFD union, Local 42, is taking in the process of a hostile takeover of the MAST union, Local 34. Both chapters are part of the International Association of Firefighters, which is acting on behalf of Local 42 and ordering an involuntary merger of the two chapters.
The implications for Kansas City could be big. Local 42 is one of the most powerful interest groups in the city. They regularly strong-arm their way through the annual budget process, securing big raises for firefighters even while tight budgets cause reductions in other city departments. You might remember the infamous sickout of Memorial Day weekend in 2002, which ultimately lead to the City Council bending over for the union. Their political clout has made KCFD one of the highest paid fire departments in the country.
