Getting fit in downtown

February 27, 2005 | 1 Comment

Midtown’s Scott Fittness has just opened a Downtown location in the River Market, and it’s just around the corner from urban pioneer River Market Fitness. It will be interesting to see if there is enough business to support an increasingly crowded market that also includes the Quality Hill YMCA, the Marriott’s new public gym, and City Hall’s public/private Fitness Source gym. But with a residential population approaching 20,000 and a workforce near 100,000, there just might room for all five gyms.

For Downtowners keeping score, it’s Gyms: 5, Grocery Stores: 0. That probably isn’t such a bad thing, considering KC is already one of the country’s fattest cities.

I can actually see the new Scott Fitness from my office window! It’s quite tucked away, but I’m sure that they’ll do just fine.

I just joined the Marriott’s new gym and it’s fantastic! I’m hoping it doesn’t get a huge boost in membership though, it’s really nice going to an uncrowded gym.
