New round of school closings proposed
February 10, 2005 |
Last night KCMSD Superintendent Bernard Taylor surprised school board members and parents with a dramatic proposal to close, consolidate, and realign several schools. Parent outrage is already building, especially towards cutbacks in the African-centered and Montesorri programs. However, the district faces a challenging budget picture with a $20 million shortfall, 6,000 fewer students since the advent of charter schools, and several schools that are way below capacity. The bottom line is that the district is shrinking and has more schools than it needs or can afford.
