School consolidation plan meets resistance

It’s not surprising that Superintendent Bernard Taylor’s proposed school consolidation plan is meeting stiff communitiy resistance. He sprung the plan on the school board at the last minute, targeted the two most popular programs (Montessori and African-centered education), and failed to consult the various parental and community advisory groups in advance.

More than a week after Superintendent Bernard Taylor proposed consolidating, closing and relocating a dozen public schools, parents, residents and even some board members say crucial details surrounding the costs and the savings are missing.

Gwen Grant, chief executive and president of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City, chastised district officials for the dearth of details. She said parents would support a plan “that makes sense” but needed to know the district’s long-term solutions for declining enrollment.
