Health levy on April ballot

KC Question 1 will be on the KCMO ballot on April 5. It asks voters for a 22 cent increase in the health levy (property tax) to help offset rising costs for Truman Medical Center, MAST Ambulance, and neighborhood clinics like Swope Health, KC Free Health Clinic, and Northland Health Access.

The levy increase would expire after 9 years, a period of time in which area leaders hope to establish a regional funding system for all of the metro’s public health facilities. According to information from Truman Medical Center, the tax support it receives from KCMO is only used to tried that city’s residents, which account for 85% of the hospital’s patients.

The campaign is being run by Mayor Barnes’ advisor Pat Gray and NorthStar Marketing. So far there doesn’t appear to be any organized opposition, although the anti-tax Jackson County Taxpayers Association hasn’t announced their position yet.

    i worked at KC Free last year and can advocate that the commitment and work that those folks do is unbelievable. most of them make pennies and generate enormous resources for a wide variety of people in KC. that place is VITAL and anything we as taxpayers can do to ensure that that place and the others remain functioning is essential to the health of our community.

    Besides KC Free, Truman Medical Center needs the additional funding. They have one of the busiest emergency rooms in Kansas City, yet they gave away $55 Million in free care last year. They make a difference for many people, people who fall through the cracks otherwise. Plus KC has a long tradition of taking care of it’s people with medical facilities open to all. I hate taxes but this carries on a civic tradition. I’m all for it.

    I read somewhere that with a $100,000 home and $15,000
    car, it would cost an extra $46 per year… you can do the math for your own from there
