Nelson architect to defend “Butler Building”

The Nelson-Atkins Museum’s much-anticipated expansion is beginning to take shape, and many in the community are worried that the final product appears to be headed toward something quite different from the design first presented by the museum. The building rising on the east side of the Nelson Lawn is most often referred to as a Butler Building or pole barn, as it looks quite a bit different than the translucent “lenses” originally envisioned. The brewing controversy isn’t just a Shuttlecock-type debate over modern art, but concern over an architectural bait-and-switch that is worrying some of the Nelson’s biggest supporters. Perhaps locally-based Butler was a corporate sponsor of the expansion?

In response to the controversy, the Nelson has moved up a previously scheduled appearance by architect Steven Holl. He will be in town to defend the building on March 17, 6:00 pm at Unity Temple on the Plaza.

Way to go Nelson, this seminar is on St. Patrick’s Day, one of the biggest holidays in KC.

  2. Tony says:

Ha! Good point Bob! We can only hope that a few St. Paddy’s party-goers will crash the event.

i’m dubious, but i’m waiting to see it actually completed . . .

besides, the barn door is open and the horse is gone. i don’t see what course of action we have left but to finish the bloody thing.

me, i’m guessing they *hope* the st paddy’s day festivities reduce attendance, and, consequently, hostility.
