Election results

Kansas hate amendment
No surprise that Kansans voted overwhelmingly for the constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions, and by a wider margin than their neighbors here in Missouri. Also no surprise that Douglas was the only county to vote no.

KCMO Health Levy
53% voted for the property tax increase for Truman Medical Center, MAST ambulance, and neighborhood health clinics. Once again, the city’s Clay and Platte County sections voted against a city-wide issue, only to be overridden by the more populous Jackson County section.

Clay: 41/59, Platte: 38/62, Jackson: 62/38

Missouri House, 38th District
Newcomer Ryan Silvey squeezes past Republican-turned-Democrat Teresa Loar. This race was widely viewed as a referendum on Governor Blunt’s draconian cuts to social services, and appareantly the Northland approve. It probably didn’t help that Loar waited until the very last minute to do any campaigning.

KCK/Wyco Mayor
Joe Reardon handily beats Rick Rehorn.

Overland Park Mayor
Ed Eilert protege Carl Gerlach defeats Neal Sader.

North Kansas City School District
Voters approve both a general levy increase and the district’s fourth high school.

The 38th District race was Loar’s to lose. She is very popular in the Northland and has excellent name recognition. Her problem was phoning it in. These days, what serious candidate waits until two weeks before the election to put up a campaing web site?

i cheered and jeered at the same time upon hearing the results of the big 2 today. only 10% turnout ovreall in KC, fortunately Q1 snuck in.

No surprise on the Kansas thing. Disappointment, but no surprise. Reardon winning was not a big surprise either, but my (5 year old) daughter wanted Rehorn to win. We’re 0 for 3 now :) (Bush, KS amendment, Reardon).

Regarding the 38th district race, where I live, I have *never* seen a candidate who did more mailings, calling, interviews, yard signs, newspaper endorsements, and visiting than Theresa Loar. We were amazed at the coverage she got and effort she invested. She blanketed the residential areas. Her opponent did far less. Theresa Loar’s party switch hurt her. Also, she is a known quantity in the northland and her positions were crystal clear. People (at least 51 percent of the voters) simply did NOT agree with her.

CWG, thanks for the insight. None of the Northlanders we asked could recall seeing much of anything from the Loar campaign, except for some campaign signs on North Oak.

I am also a resident of the 38th District. I formerly voted for Danny. However I supported Ryan this time due to his hard work/honesty and Teresa’a lack of it. I did not nor heard or see one person tell me that Teresa Loar personally went to their door, while in every election, Ryan has been at my door step personally. Two specific things swayed my vote….the first was the switching of parties, specifically because back in November, Teresa co-hosted a fundrasier for Ryan against Dan!!!! That proves she cares more about winning elections and the limelight than “fulfilling Dan’s legacy.” The second was the unfair characterization of Ryan as an extremist. Her and the party said Ryan opposes stem-cell research…Lie! They said Ryan supports cutting FIrst Steps….Lie! They said he was home schooled…Lie!! All these things Ryan personally assured me were false and he was breaking with the majority of members of his party. This is important to me because I fully support First Steps and Stem Cell! I may not support Ryan in the future but this time he was the best of the two!!
