Look but don’t touch - some porn restrictions pass
May 16, 2005 |
It looks like the Kansans driving east for gambling, 5% beer, evolution, and cheap gas could soon be passing Missourians headed west for video booths and lap dances.
Missouri State Senator and Chief Morality Officer Matt Bartle wasn’t able to get his stem cell research ban passed this year, but he was able to deal a big cock block to Missouri’s adult entertainment industry. While not as severe as the crippling porn tax first proposed, there will be several new restrictions. The new law will likely end up in court for quite a while.
- No more full nudity in strip clubs.
- Strippers cannot touch customers and must remain at least 10 feet away and behind a railing, therefore making tipping very difficult and lap dances illegal.
- No private booths in adult video stores.
- No patrons under 21 in a strip club or video store (say goodbye rural clubs like the Fantasy Ranch that rely on military and college business).

I wish the text of the bill actually read:
OUTLAW ALL SEX IN MISSOURI. SEX IS DIRTY AND BAD AND YOURE GOING TO HELL IF YOU LOOK AT A NAKED HUMAN BODY OR HAVE SEX, IT IS UNNATURAL AND SHAMEFUL.
But I guess this is a good start.
Sex is not dirty, bad and shameful, but most of those clubs are. I think Bartle over-reached with his first proposal, but I’m happy to see some more restrictions on these places.
I’d prefer to see these establishments regulated through thoughful zoning, but there needs to be a solution in rural Missouri.
I’ve worked with a group trying to get modest restrictions on payday lenders in Missouri. “You can’t regulate the free market” was the retort of many lawmakers. It is interesitng how they are willing to embrace (no pun intended) this effort.
I don’t get into the whole Kansas-Missouri rivalry/snobbishness thing, but as a Kansan, I do crack up every time I drive east on 70 and see the multitude of 150-feet high ADULT VIDEOS XXX signs and the like. I like the Fireworks signs too. Very classy.
But rather than trying to shut down the industry, I think a better idea would be to just restrict their advertising rights along the interstate. That way, everyone knows those things are there but people don’t have to explain to our 5-year olds what XXX means every five minutes every time they drive to St. Louis.
I think most people don’t care that much that strip clubs exist, but they don’t want to think about it and they don’t want to see 500 billboards for them on a family vacation.
Fix the potholes and tear down the porn signs–now that’s an agenda I can get behind.
Hippster, there is already a new law regulating the billboards. They aren’t banned, but they should be getting much tamer soon.
Matt, sex is already illegal in Missouri. A few years ago the General Assembly tried to rewrite the anti-sodomy laws to make them stand up to court challenges. The final language was so vague that it actually implies that all sex is illegal, even the good ol’ missionary position.
Free Lapdances for all!!!
Hipster evidently has done much driving in Kansas…take the toll road to Topeka and you see the same thing..huge billboards advertising strip clubs and book stores. Its definately not an isolated problem, but advertising and the right to exist are two different things. IMHO the right thing to do is tax the crap out of it, keep advertising out of public eye, enforce proper zoning restrictions and leave them alone.
The Missouri govt is following the same knee jerk radical fundamintalist reaction as most of the others at the moment. Sadly I think its going to backfire, I have never voted anything other than Republican but Bartle and Blunts actions so far have guaranteed that next election I will be a blue stater as will most of the “moderate” (ie common sense) republicans I have talked to. Does it mean the US is going liberal…heck no it just means the majority are normal people who dont belive that its right to inflict either extreme of morality on anyone else.
watch the pendulum swing just like it did from the 50’s to the 60’s… wild times ahead!
THIS IS A COMMENT TO ALL THE REPORTS ABOVE AS FOLLOWS.
FOR ALL THE NEW LAWS, I MUST SAY THAT THEY ARE WAY OUT OF LINE.AND FAR AS KANSAS AND MISSOURI HAVING THEIR BILL BOARD PROBLEMS THEIR EQUAL IN THAT AREA. BUT, AS FOR THE QUALITY THERE ARE JUST AS DIRTY CLUBS IN KANSAS AS IN MISSOURI (HINT HINT THE OUTHOUSE). IF THERE WASN’T NO DIRT THERE WOULD BE NO REASON TO HAVE A DOOR CHARGE, JUST LIKE WORLDS OF FUN OR ANY OTHER ADULT ENTERTAINMENT YOU GOTTA PAY TO PLAY, DIFFERENCE HERE IS YOU MUST BE OF LEGAL AGE AND BE ABLE TO SEE WOMEN BOLD ENOUGH TO SHOW THEIRSELVES A LITTLE TO STRANGE MEN IN ORDER TO PAY THEIR BILLS, EAT, AND EVEN PLAY WITH THEIR MONEY. PEOPLE OF THE PUBLIC EYE MUST REMEMBER THAT THEY THOUGHT MARILYN MONROE WAS A GODDESS YET FORGET HOW EXOTIC AND OPEN SHE WAS. MEN FIND WORKING FOR CASH OK,SO WHY CAN’T WOMEN? AND FOR ANYONE THAT THINKS STRIPPERS, DANCERS, OR ENTERTAINERS TO WHATEVER YOU PREFER TO CALL THEM,ARE DIRTY OR SLUTTY OR PROSTITUTES IN ANY WAY YOUR ARE SO WRONG. THEY DON’T GIVE YOU A BED AND SAY NOW GIVE YOUR LAP DANCE, YOU ARE CONSTANTLY WATCHED BY THE BOUNCERS, MANAGERS, BARTENDERS, CUSTOMERS, VICE, AND MOST OF ALL THE OTHER GIRLS WHO WILL KICK YOUR ASS IF YOU DO DIRTY THINGS! SO, SEEING SOME BREAST, A BUTT CHEEK, AND A SWEET SMILE THAT OFTEN HAS A BEAUTIFUL FRAGRANCE TO FOLLOW ISN’T NEARLY AS BAD AS YOU THINK. A PORNO OR PLAYBOY IS WORSE YOU CAN TOUCH IT!!!! THANX FOR READING MY COMMENTS STACIE AKA SMILING STACIE!!
