Crime Wave
June 23, 2005 |
Six months into a sudden rise in homicides, city leaders finally respond. The current total of 54 murders is higher than this point in recent years of record lows, putting us on track to break 100 for the first time since 2001.
Perhaps the City Council will finally revisit mistakes in their 2002 promise to add 20 police officers a year without dedicating any money to pay for them. Perhaps it might also be time to reconsider the huge expansion of policing in the low-crime Northland and redirect some of that to higher-crime areas of the East Side, as Yael T Abouhalkah suggests.
Sources say Mayor Barnes will soon announce the formation of a commission to debate the merits of appointing a blue ribbon task force to consider commissioning a study of crime in KC.
