Johnny Dare’s snorted away?
June 11, 2005 | 32 Comments
The biker bar formerly known as Johnny Dare’s went tits up this week, just days after renaming itself American Chrome and announcing plans to expand into a national chain. The sudden bankruptcy of such a popular establishment seems odd, until one considers the latest gossip of yet another cocaine bust in the Glazer family. Sad times for suburban Harley posers.

It was Stan Glazer, the family patriarch. The whole reason Johnny Dare was brought into the bar was because Stan already has a prior concaine conviction and felons are not allowed to get liquor licenses…
It’s very odd that the media has chosen to ignore this story.
the media in KC ignores lots of stuff.
here’s what i, as a member of the mainstream media, have learned from digging into this for the past week…
the bar was owned by craig glazer’s mother and her trust. craig was the “cook” at the bar because his past convictions prevented him from getting a liquor license. the city had tried to see if there was anything un-kosher going on with that arrangement, but could prove nothing.
police in kansas city have no record of a recent cocaine bust against any member of the glazer family or any principals in the bar/restuarant.
there is a report of a DUI arrest made on glazer recently, but no charges yet. that DUI would have no impact on the bar unless it was a felony DUI, which i am told it is not.
the bar’s liquor license was current and in no jeapordy of being revoked at the time of the bankruptcy filing.
if someone knows something more, PLEASE… let’s hear it.
I think they were closed for adulteration of a historic building- one of the oldest in all of KC.

Media . . . The answer is, there IS a sound if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it. Just because you don’t know about something doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Isn’t that an axiom of journalism or something?
I’m waiting to see what The Pitch reports in this issue; if they find nothing than I guess it was just a juicy rumor. But the fact that the local MSM doesn’t even mention that a VERY popular club owned by a VERY influential family just shuts down out of nowhere suggests that there MAY be something to this story. That this story/rumor doesn’t even get a mention in the local broadcast news is shameful and indicative of crappy local reporting. (Note: It felt good writing that even though you’re probably just a troll. And it was a good troll by the way! I’d be really bummed out if I actually thought you were a journalist)
here’s the difference between a blog and the mainstream media… we need to have hard facts before we can publish a story.
i found this story as interesting as you, tony. but there is no evidence that these rumors you’ve heard are anything but rumors.
as for why the bar shut down out of nowhere… perhaps it was the almost ONE MILLION DOLLARS in debt the owners had racked up.
Hmmm, when I posted the rumor and I did stress that it was only a rumor, I had no idea it would generate so much talk. But that’s the great thing about blogging, as a blogger I don’t feel the need to meet the high journalistic qualities of the media. And I say that with a stright face believe it or not. Especially in my case since I see my blog as being on the fringe of acceptable. But when I’m involved in one of those (“what’s new?) conversations and hear something that perks up my ears I couldn’t pass up the temptation to post about it. But before that I let a couple of people whom I hold in high journalistic regard know about the rumor. Like spreading the love you know? But you all have to admit that wither the rumor pans out or runs flat, it most definitely created a buzz and showed the power of blogging.
Since when are “hard facts” needed for the mainstream media to report on something? I call bullshit.
call bullshit all you’d like, jason.
there is no evidence of charges, let alone an arrest.
what are we supposed to say… some nameless, faceless guy on blogkc.com says glazer was busted blowin’ snow?
i love you guys… i read this blog constantly and check in on a lot of what you write. if i can verify something on here as true, i’ll make it a story.
I was calling bullshit on your blanket statement “we need to have hard facts before we can publish a story.”

I could post links all day but I think you get the point. If the media needs a story bad enough, they make it up.
clearly those are guys who didn’t want to keep their jobs as much as i do.
let me re-phrase.
i need to have hard facts before i can publish a story.
The Glazer boys were simply idiot businessmen. They couldn’t manage their way out of a wet paper bag. I was privy to some of their office discussions, and nobody, NOBODY, would listen to another person. They’d all speak at once, never listen, and continue to try to interject their own ideas.
NONE of them knew what the other guy was doing. If it were a TV show, nobody would believe it.
On the night they closed, for example, Jeff pocketed $600 from one of the waitresses and the money never found its way to the safe.
The Glazer’s weren’t on salary and could dip into the company funds any time they wanted, yet they kept their contractors and suppliers consistently behind in their payments to them. They were perpetually running out of some product in the bar or kitchen – and this is after they’d been in business for over 10 years without Stan.
What a joke. And in the end, they managed to shit on all their employees.
Dear Idiot….you must get your info from
your mom’s toliet…..Stan Glazer was NEVER arrested for anything EVER, perhaps you have him confused with Craig Glazer, who served 90 days of house arrest for a drug charge that if it would have been so bad a
charge he would have gone to prison…Craig
is responsible for most of Westports success..like starting RED FRIDAY.
Well shit… Red Friday! I mean jeez you should have spoken up sooner. Everyone knows K.C. would be shit without Red Friday Hey wait a minute… isn’t R.F. just a Hallmark holiday for drunks?
Has Jonny Dare said anything about this? I haven’t heard, and it seems like he looked like the biggest dunce in this confederacy. For a so-called “shock jock,” he should be firing up the airwaves.
The rumor mill is that they are several pending sexual harrassment lawsuits against Mr. Glazer….what bettter way to not have to pay up that to file bankruptcy…what a loser….(not JD)
Let me, once again, try to correct some misassumptions.
First of all, to demonstrate credibility, I am the webmaster for http://stanglazer.com, which you are linking to above. I was also the defacto campaign manager for Stan’s mayoral bid two years ago, so I know somewhat of which I speak.
As a favor to me, I asked Stan if he knew of any employment opportunities in the Metro area. Stan referred me to his sons, Jeff and Craig, who were, at the time, developing what would become Johnny Dare’s Bar.
I was initially retained by them to write a business plan and assist them in its implementation. As it happened, they were, to say the least, somewhat disorganized and behind schedule, so I further assisted them by moving the telephone stsyem and re-installing their computer point-of-sale system. I also assisted as needed anywhere else and put in 16-18 hour days for a long time!
I have dual doctorates in Retail Science as well as Food Marketing as well as a Masters’ degree in Business Administration and nearly 35 years experience in the retail and food industry. Unfortunately, neither of the sons saw fit to take advantage of my skills. In fact, on the night they opened, they fully well expected to continue to operate the establishment as they did when it was Stanford & Sons. There were no systems or procedures in place to handle the voluminous amount of business they did ($24k opening night). I correctly predicted that the business would collapse under its own weight!
I was unable to persuade any of them to my point of view; in fact, I more or less agree with Kit’s comment of June 20. Both are rather arrogant and condescending. Jeff in particular thinks he knows all there is to know about the entertainment/food business and, as has been seen, soes not.
Had they followed my advice, they would not have been in the predicament they are in today, I believe (okay, that’s a little arrogant on my part but I have a resume to prove it)!
They never even put me on the payroll; Craig was paying me cash out of his pocket (and all the BBQ I could eat; I do not drink). The straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back was when they demoted their long-standing (from Stanford & Sons days) General Manager (Ron M.) and hired the gal who worked for the cash register company, quite frankly a ditzy blond, in my professional view. (I still have receipts in my wallet for items purchased by me but were never reeimbursed.) Their longstanding bookkeeper is just as arrogant an clueless and the rest of them.
As to the liquor license: the liquor license was (and is) in the name of United Restaurants, Inc. (Missouri) and Ron. M. as the Managing Director. The business was always owned by the sons’ mother’s trust.
They had an investor, their former salesman from Lady Baltimore (also Jewish, if it matters), who invested $100,000 (against my private advice to him).
I believe the sons continued to use the till as their private piggybank; but I was never privy to or thought that there was any illegal activity, i.e., drugs, etc. going on or I would have been out of there. I do not believe that Craig was involved in any alcohol or drug arrests, since he is still on supervision by the US Probation office, Western District of Missouri.
The third Glazer brother, Jack, would show up from time to time and get a little tipsy, but nothing egregious. Jack is, in my estimation, the most level-headed of the bunch, although I believe he is(or was) on parole from the State of Missouri.
The sad thing is, I would probably help them out of this mess if they asked (and if they agreed not to interfere).
As far as Stan is concerned: Although I haven’t had contact with Stan for over a year, he is still, and always will be, my friend. I have kept his old website up for nostalgia purposes (and the fact that I paid for it for 2 years). Stan has NEVER, to the best of my knowledge and ability been arrested for ANYTHING (and I would know, since I was a campaign “insider”). The malicious rumors about the prostitution charge were patently false; Stan was questioned, repeat QUESTIONED, by an, in my opinion, overzealous WOMAN undercover KCPD vice officer. But no money— or even discussion of it— ever changed hands, which would have been necessary for a soliciting charge. In my view, it was an attempt at entrapment. As I understand it, Stan was just being friendly Stan and trying to help out someone he thought to be an innocent waif. And which one of YOU would not have done the same thing? Heck, I’m just as much of a sucker for a pretty gal as the next guy! The media was so set out against him and tried to dig up anything that they could when he was running for mayor. And now, lets see, the Kansas City Star got some government cheese and so did the folks at KMBC channel 9, both outspoken critics! So Barnes pays them back with a little TIF (TIF shouldn’t be used to move a rich TV station away from downtown and give… yes, I said GIVE… them a building, should it?
Think about it!!!
If the Mayor, Cauthen, Warren Erdman, and their ilk knew some of the things I knew, they would surely kill me!
Everything’s NOT up-to-date in Kansas City!

Not much on my mind. I don’t care. I’ve just been letting everything happen without me , but shrug. Whatever. I feel like a void.
Not much on my mind lately. My life’s been completely boring these days. I’ve just been hanging out not getting anything done. So it goes.
Rumor or fact #1: What about the rumor that young Craig ran a scam while at Arizona State: while posing as a cop he would set up both the drug sale and drug bust – and walk away with all the drugs and money. Yes, this is rumor, but how hard could it be to check this out.
Rumor or fact #2: The Glazer family is notorious for screwing vendors and contractors. From the days of the Wishbone to current vendors and contractors – how hard can it be to find out how many bills were unpaid?
This family is an embarrassment to KC politics and businesses. They fit better on a reality TV show. Cy

It is no rumor about Craig. In fact, he hit the front page of the KC Star when he was busted for just what you suggest, while working for Vern Miller, who at the time was Attorney General of Kansas. Miller lost a close election for governer, perhaps because of the Glazer scandal. I am very suprised this is not well known Glazer trivia; it sure made big news in its day, and all of Glazer’s long time aquantances know all about it…..
I have been entertained reading this website today, I had not read it in a couple years…I noticed one of the last comments from a childhood friend, Andy Thomas, sadly he passed away two weeks ago…to set the record straight, finally, Johnny Dare’s closed mostly due to Westport simply not being busy like it once was…our bar was much smaller than Stanford and Sons which housed a comedy club, pool room and dance floor til 2004, when the folks next door, our landlords would not renew our 30 year old lease…thus no more comedy, dance or pool, the club was downsized nearly 3/4s from its original size…making it tough to gross nearly the money we once did…no door cover, no comedy money, etc…with Dare, the owners and a large management staff, the overhead was too large for the income, simple as that..while the place was smokin hot busy on weekends, weekdays were average at best…as you now see Westport is dead during the week and average at best on weekends…Dare’s was the last hurrah for westport…the area, other than Bill Nigro cheerd our demise, even though it doomed them…simply jealous people, small minded, nothing unusal about that these days…I can’t address all the silly comments from the past here, but there was no drug bust, dui, sexual harrassment..sorry, Stan, my dad and I talk daily, as with all families there are ups and downs…he has never been arrested and convicted of anything, my Mom, died this summer, she was the owner in Westport, she was a wonderful lady and I miss her…my brothers still work for us…we are at Legends, with one of the nations most known and respected comedy units of all time, written about in every paper and magazine that matters…even Lewis Black played our club as a favor recently cause he likes us…and we treat people well..sure over 33 years in business there have been arguments, slow paid bills etc..never with malice or on purpose..it happens…if we were so silly, or bad business folks we wouldn’t be where we are today..its not luck, its hard work, and yes I did do drugs when I was younger, who didn’t? And yes I was a famous outlaw, a book was written about me out this summer, you can buy at Barnes and Noble by Sal Manna..The King of Sting…it is well documented and I think will do well nationally..it is a true crime book, so read it and have at it….I can’t make everyone like me, nobody can, I was and have been blessed with an exciting interesting life..my family and I have added much fun and enjoyment to many lives in this town for decades, we are not saints, never said we were…neither was Wyatt, Frank or Jesse,or P.T Barnum..you get my drift…if you want to stand out in life, you pay a price…I have and did…I make no excuse or apology ..I have met few who can walk in these shoes..but thats my opinion I will let history speak for itself….I loved Westport but its sadly in my rear view mirror, they never loved us..and with us gone…well its just not the same is it…the measure of a man is not how he handles the wins, its how he handles the failures and the falling down…I have always stood up and come back….I would hope all of you will do the same in your lives….all the best “King of Sting”….Craig

Craig,
Way to go on the book, and very insightful last post. I worked for your dad as a manager in the early days of Bobby D. and Larry. You and Jeff were around at the end, I left for fast food and Texas. Your place is one of my most exciting memories, could match a few stories with you I’m sure. Please tell Jeff and Stan hello. Congrats on the book, I’ll pick it up asap. I’m sorry to hear you guys are gone, keep it going in OP.
Good luck,
Chris B.
Thanks again!
