Meet the new Paseo Ferry
June 11, 2005 | 6 Comments
The first rumor of the day is wildly unsubstantiated, but we’ll throw it out just to see if anyone has any tips to pass along. Emerging scuttlebutt is saying that engineers working on the Paseo Bridge renovation have discovered that the 50 year-old bridge is in much worse shape than ever imagined and might not be able to re-open.
MoDOT is believed to be preparing for the announcement of a new Paseo ferry service to run during the 4-5 years it will take to design and build a replacement for the metro’s busiest river crossing.

Well this is certianly bad news but am i the only one who is not suprised? We are probably lucky that damned bridge didn’t fall into the river years ago.
worst. roads. eva.
I have heard that it one of the contractors who is saying the bridge should be torn down. Another contractor is saying it’s OK and a renovated bridge could hold up a few more years until a replacement is built. For now they are going to keep working and evaluating what they uncover. No decision will be made for at least for a few more weeks.
It’s very unlikely that a determination of that nature (cheaper to build a new than repair the old) would come at this point. The earlier evaluations would have to have been totally incompetent.
If, and I repeat, _if_, the engineers come to the conclusion that building a new bridge is preferable, there has to be crookedness involved.
I have full confidence that the city will make the most cost-effective decision.
It’s very possible that the original evaluation could be far off the mark. Think back to when the bridge failed two winters ago. It had just undergone a thorough inspection that missed all of the pidgeon shit corroding the joints.
Wow good thing I’m moving up that direction and work downtown! If they do a ferry I will do nothing but laugh my butt off everytime I board that thing.
But I have to admit I’m happy to see them doing something about the road/bridge conditions in our dead last city.
