Medicaid cuts hit today

Missouri flagToday the first wave of Governor Blunt’s Medicaid cuts is due to go into effect, pending a last minute lawsuit to delay them. 24,000 people are set to lose their coverage today, with another 50,000 later this year. The $250 million Medicaid cut will lose the state another $380 million in federal matching money.

The new eligibility requirements mean that a single mother with two children will lose health benefits if she makes more than $350 a month. The previous income limit was $1050 a month.

The impact is already being felt. This week Truman Medical Centers announced the elimination of prescription medicine assistance, adult dental programs, and tighter restrictions on charity care for non-residents of KCMO or Jackson County.

And yet in spite of the announcement from TMC Blunt was on the tube last night saying that what he and his fellow Republicans have done will not result in any Missourians having problems getting health care. I truly despise him and his cohorts. I used to be proud to live here and I’m not all that sure of it any more.
