UMKC Fundraising Sets Record

August 24, 2005 |

UMKCAll of the uproar around chancellors, faculty coups, and secession haven’t had an impact on UMKC’s first big fundraising campaign. The Biz Journal reports record donations to the school.

This might do something to dispel the idea that UMKC can’t ever win the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of Kansas Citians without seceding from UM System. The Hall Family Foundation made big donations last year to support life science research. They gave UMKC $4 million, and KU $40 million (a school that is also run by “distant” state-wide board of regents). Something isn’t right when our civic and philanthropic leaders are lobbying for a higher caliber at UMKC and then shipping most of their money out of town.

The Halls live in Kansas, so UMKC is just as out of town as Lawrence. But that isn’t my point.

With the way development has spread to the West, Lawrence is now on the cusp of the KC metro area. Growth in KC depends as much, if not more on success at KU than at UMKC.
