Could Missouri lose a second incumbent governor to an intra-party challenger? It might happen in 2008. Republican State Treasurer Sarah Steelman is an astute politician that has tangled with the Blunt administration since day one and appears to be positioning herself for a possible primary challenge in the next election. In a recent interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch she declined to rule out such a challenge. Given Governor Blunt’s abysmal approval ratings and his feud with the powerful Missouri Right to Life organization, the staunchly anti-abortion and anti-gay Steelman would be a strong contender of she chose to run.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Steelman isn’t afraid to challenge party, issues

The question seems to be that if Steelman runs as someone even more conservative than Blunt will she really stand a chance? Blunt’s low approval ratings come largely from his doing something the really far right loves but he promised to not do when he was campaigning, a drastic cut in Medicaid benefits including some that are vital to a lot of people. Will someone whose main appeal in the primaries is going to be “I’m even more conservative than Blunt.” really stand a chance in the general election?
