Hurricane Katrina info

Monetary donations to the Red Cross are the best way to help. The Star has a list of other suggested charities if you are so inclined. Here are some good sources of hurricane news from the blogosphere. N.O. Pundit and the TV station web sites have lost and found bulletin boards for refugees and loved ones.

Locally, Children’s Mercy Hospital is hosting more than two dozen patients that were airlifted late last night from the New Orleans Children’s Hospital by the Missouri Air National Guard. Governor Blunt is sending 1,000 National Guard troops to Louisiana and Mississippi, and Governor Sebelius has announced similar deployment. A team of firefighters from Columbia is already in New Orleans and has rescued 300-plus survivors. UMKC, Mizzou, Rockhurst, and KU are already enrolling students from N.O. area colleges. Local media report several refugees already settled with KC area family and friends.

Rather than rant about several points regarding this worst American disaster in modern times I shall play the Optimistic Bushite-American:
“Hey except for today, the stock market has been rising.”

The Kansas City Public Library organized an effort among other metro libraries, including North Kansas City Public Library, Johnson County Library and Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, for all the library locations to serve as money collection points to assist The American Red Cross and Salvation Army’s disaster relief efforts.

Their home page has more info: http://www.kclibrary.org/
