Boobies win out over burgers

October 31, 2005 |

It’s semi-official. Hooters is indeed taking over the beloved Westport Flea Market :( Hearne has the scoop… Construction is set to begin around the beginning of 2006 for a July opening. A design has been created that will allegedly blend in with the neighborhood more than the typical Hooters.

It should be noted that Hooters is not to blame for the demise of the Flea. The owner is retired and has been trying to sell the business for several years. No locals have ever stepped up with an offer to buy the Flea, and it would have eventualy closed regardless of Hooters. Also, the deal isn’t completely final, so if there are any budding restauranteurs out there, now is your chance to make a move.

At the very least, Hooters could remodel the existing building.

Joe, what do you mean “at least”. You buy the building and then you can do what you want with it. I don’t really like that a Hooters is going in there either - but any legitimate company is going to do what makes the most sense for them in regards to P&L. Remodeling a low ceiling, structurally questionable building with years of smoke and other debris (Bob B?) probably doesn’t fit their business plan.

I can’t imagine them trying to remodel that dive. I live pretty close to it, and I will be buying extra mouse traps and bug bombs when they demolish the place.

This is great news for the neighborhood. We are acting like the Flea has some art historical significance. I will miss a Warsteiner and Mini Market with Cheese as much as the next guy — but the place was a dump with a sordid past.

the last thing westport needs is another chain with disregard for urban design standards. this is westport, not noland road. this is the wrong direction for the neighborhood for a variety of reasons. hopefully as power + light comes online, the “party zone” will shift more towards downtown, allowing westport to become more of a neighborhood again, and hooters will realize they made a mistake.

I dont think this will really make a difference one way or another. It will cause a stir when it opens then fade into who cares a few months down the line. While Hooters is a fine franchise I think there could have been a better franchise or business selected for that area.
