New crime task force

The city’s murder tally has now hit 96, compared with 91 for all of 2004. The rising number has prompted Maryor Barnes to follow her usual M.O. and appoint a grand task force to study the issue. It will be led by Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Brooks and is due to report back on January 12, almost a year after the problem started.

Meanwhile the KCPD continues to respond to the East Side’s bloodshed by sending 100 new police officers to the Northland

Hey, if anything can solve the murder problem, it’s a 29-person task force with a 3-month deadline to come up with some sort of report. I don’t expect any political grandstanding or petty in-fighting. How long before we hear that murders are way up in part due to the lack of opportunities for minority and women contractors to get work on the Sprint Center?

A 29-person committee is exactly the sort of innovative idea that local government is famous for. It’s a cunning plan that cannot fail.

I’m actually considering applying for a spot on this task force. However, my reputation as a common sense libertarian may render me unqualified.
