Yes it is a Pitch related web site and also connects to Dave Helling another racist. Funny it is not mentioned that the Star had financial problems and had to lay people off. When they get through with the downtown plant they will be laying off more people.

I agree with the writer. In fact I know one of the sources from a article the Pitch Weekly did and I understand from one of the people in the article the writer lied about a few statements. it is not the first time I have heard that about articels written and published in the Pitch. I do not know of any problems the Call is have from a ffinancial point of view. I think this is just another weak attempt to attack a black paper. Why doesn’t anyone talk about the guy at Meredith who was proven to be a racist? I will continue to read the most candidate paper in the black community. The fact still remains rev. Cleaver won and whomever you all put up next time he will beat again. Quit crying over spilled milk. Metzl nor Patterson would have beat Cleaver. Get over it.

I believe the record will support the fact that the Call is more than a “church newsletter” it is the newspaper of record for the urban core. Possibly the reason that you don’t see the paper in the various places you are use to seeing them it is because they are sold out. The Call is an institution in this city. They are celebrating moving into their 86th year and actual I find it more informative than you attempt to give it credit for. The situation you speak of with Cleaver did not phase the newspaper one bit. Many people are still trying to figure out where the story was in reporting it. I think that mentioning it on this website is a weak attempt by Pitch Weekly persons to inflate their own significance. The fact of the matter is The Star is the paper of record for the mainstream and the Call is the paper of record for the urban core. The Pitch weekly will never be a paper of record. The Call’s website is being redesigned and it has nothing to do with the financial status in fact the circulation now includes Johnson county, the airport and suburban areas such as Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs. I believe they are selling more papers than ever before and it is not based upon a church audience. The Globe maintains that audience. To my knowledge the Call has not laid off anyone, the lights are still on and the paper is on the stands every Friday without delay. You have bad sources if they are telling you something different. One could say the journalist quality of all papers is down, just a viable news stories are down. I do take issue with attacking an institution in this community.

I’d say “church newsletter” is great description. Sadly the journalistic quality of the Call has declined dramatically from it’s heyday, but it’s still an important voice for the community.

With the exception of their crusade during the “precious doe” case, the Call is basically a church newsletter. It certainly is important to Kansas City and the black community, but you certainly in my opinion cannot consider it a journalistic newspaper.

Last year’s Cleaver controversy (Call reporter on his payroll) couldn’t have helped and thanks to the KCMO school district over the years the number of Black kids who can read is probably declining. So things aren’t looking good for papers in general.
