School Board fires Taylor

October 27, 2005 |

KCMSDJust when it looked like 11th & McGee had finally lost its distinction as the #1 site for live TV news reports, the revolving door on the superintendent’s office is once again in full rotation. Last night the Board of Education voted 8-1 not to renew Supertindent Bernard Taylor’s contract when it expires in June 2006. The main reason cited was slow progress turning around the district’s poor educational performance, however the real culprit was Taylor’s unpopular proposals consolidate and close several schools - including the African-centered programs popular with special interests. However, Taylor’s successor will face the same problems of declining enrollment and excess capacity. The bottom line is that the district has too many schools for too few students, and no amount of indignant outrage can change that fact.

During Taylor’s time the district regained provisional accreditation and came close to full accreditation, turned an attempted state takeover of the district, ended the decades-long desgregation lawsuit, and finally posted its first improvement in test scores. However, Taylor’s most important accomplishment is simply longevity and stability. His brief four years were the longest tenure in 20 years. It looked like the annual superintendent firings school board scandals were over, so we’ll have to wait and see if this school board can move forward maturely and professionally.
