Chef of the Year

January 26, 2006 |

Celina Tio of The American Restaruant in Crown Center is Chef magazine’s 2006 Chef of the Year. The last Kansas Citians win that honor were also at the American, husband and wife Debbie Gold and Micheal Smith, now at 40 Sardines in Johnson County. Just a couple of weeks ago The Star profiled Tio’s kitchen makeover at her home in the Volker neighborhood.

The American is great. My favorite thing is the rolls, and they’re free. Everything else is good, too.

I will never know. I’m way too poor to eat The American Restaurant so they could probably serve country friend ass at the place and I’d never know . . . neither would you for that matter because rich people who eat at 4 star restaurants have horrible taste.

Now the best pizza in KC (????), that’s an argument worth having.

Dinner at the American is $150.00 for two; I don’t drink beer. Most of my friends spend about the same on beer in a month as I spend eating decent meals a few times a year. No biggy.

Best pizza, to me, is Italian Delight (original at Indian Springs, newest one off of Johnson Drive).
