Gregg Johnson opening more restaurants
January 27, 2006 | 4 Comments
Gregg Johnson, owner of Minsky’s and Osteria Ill Centro is opening some more restaurants. First is EGGtc., a breakfast and lunch joint on the same block of Main Street as Osteria and the South Plaza Minksy’s. Then there is the twelth Minsky’s in Merriam, plus rumors of yet another Minsky’s in Union Hill.

While Johnsons’s restaurants are for the most part successful and serve some very good food, the man is probably the least deserving of good fortune amongst all KC area restauranteurs. I worked at the Plaza Minsky’s many years ago and the guy is a first class ass. The rat problem in that building went unattended and the prep areas were staggering filthy. Yes, he won a very impressive award from Wine Spectator, but the critics obviously don’t inspect the kitchens, do they? (Too bad, because perhaps they could have seen the cook at Osteria drop a pan full of pasta on the floor, only to bend over to pick it and continue to cook and serve it). I sincerely hope- for the patrons of KC- that these new locations will be run better (read: more SANITARY).
And further, his success should be fully credited to the staff that he hires. The ones that have not fallen into apathy put a great deal of effort into the places and keep them functioning. Johnson, meanwhile, schmoozes customers and barks insults and nonsensical demands to the employees. Classy guy.
No Name must not have much restaurant experience, because what he/she describes is quite common in the industry. Inspections aside, most people really shouldn’t think very much about what goes on behind the kitchen doors. Otherwise they would never eat out, anywhere.
There’s a small red brick building on 31st, a little East of the “Velvet Dog”. It’s been under renovation for a few months now. I wonder if that’s the new Minski’s?
Minsky’s Pizza is simply the best. Super specialtie pies and a terrific menu. This is the ultimate in pizza. I worked at Minsky’s for 5 years so I am biased. However, I later worked for Pizza Hut and Little Caesar’s. NO comparison at all.
