Jane Flynn, R.I.P.

January 27, 2006 |

Kansas City lost a living legend yesterday. Historic preservationist Jane Flynn has passed away at the age of 81. Flynn was a vocal fighter for more than 30 years. Among her accomplishments where the formation of the Landmarks Commission and the city’s preservation program, designation of the 18th & Vine historic district, National Historic Landmark status for the Mutual Musicians Foundation building, and bringing national attention to neglect of the neigbhorhood around President Truman’s home in Independence. In addition to authoring several books local and women’s history, Jane was also president of the Historic Kansas City Foundation and active in the Jackson County Historical Society. And of course she joined Walt Bodine’s radio show every month to talk about local history and answer listener’s questions.

“Street-fighting preservationist is how I describe myself,” Flynn once said, explaining her devotion to her task. “I’d be willing to stand in front of a wrecker’s ball, and I’ve come close to it.”

I listen to Walt Bodine pretty regularly. Some topics I’ll give a miss to but the shows with Jane Flynn were always ones I’d try to catch.

Every now and then we are in the presence of unselfish giving. Mrs. Flynn gave time and strength to fight the good fights that many of us did not even know existed. From this historic devotion is the preservation of a great part of our city. “Thank you” is not enough.
