Oh these darn stadiums. Jackson County will foot the bill for the upgrades while the rest of Kansas City gets off scott free. I do realize that Jackson County "owns" the stadiums, but we certainly are not getting back our rent are we? And when the final bill for the upgrades alone comes in we will have collected $1 Billion over the lifespan of the tax. Why wasn't the tax engineered to garner only the stated amount needed now? Maybe because the terms and price keep changing. There's a line in the movie "Gigi" when Maman says "it is a pleasure to see the privileged enjoying their privileges" I never would have thought that this irony would apply to me.

I agree with you Tim. We are getting a roof put on to have the possibility of the superbowl coming to kansas city once every 15 years. Not a good use of tax payer money

I'm not gonna vote to put a half-billion dollar roof an a run-down 30+ year-old stadium. Ridiculous waste of money.

Ah, thank you for that clarification. It's been confusing for me to follow that story for a while now.

Patrick, are you referring to the County Legislature or the Missouri General Assembly?

One of the more interesting part of the lease agreements is that the legislature has until March 30 to approve exempting the sales tax from any tax-increment financing deals. The legislature wasn't aware of it and I doubt it could pass in time. The vote would be considered taking a position on publicly funded stadiums. I don't think rural legislators and many others would vote yes.

Is there a website that has all the details of this thing broken down? I read through the lease documents, but I still had many questions.

My favorite part about the leases is how the teams each pay $450k in rent but the city, county, and state pay each team about $4m in "management fees" to play in the stadiums. In other words, Missouri taxpayers pay the teams rent to play in the stadiums the taxpayers own.

I wish The Star would spend some resources other than their usual unsigned editorial supporting the plan (no matter what the plan is, they support it) breaking down the lease and explaining why or why not it's a good deal.

Derek, the roof is a separate tax. It's a use tax on business from outside the county, like catalogs and such.
