Coastal Cupcake Craze Comes to Cowtown
February 20, 2006 |
Starbucks didn’t do it. Neither did World Market, Whole Foods, ice bars, Nordstrom’s, tea houses, or martini bars. Nor will the impending arrival of Crate & Barrell or the rumored IKEA. Kansas Citians’ inferiority complex is very vulnerable to comparison with other cities’ retail options and cultural fads. But now that we have our first cupcake shop, our self-confidence in being a Big City can be sustained for at least six more months. Oh, nevermind, we’re still waiting for REI…

holy CRAP! how did i miss this trend? i am SO UNCOOL.
*cries salty unhip tears*
“Two, four, six, eight, 12, BAKER’S DOZEN! I told you that I’m crazy ’bout those cupcakes, cousin!”
Brilliant post. I love our inferiority complex.
But remember, if the stadium tax doesn’t pass, one of the teams might leave and then KC will be no better than Omaha. Seriously, people make this argument on sports radio every day.
Sweet.
(And either sports team can leave KC if they want. I’d be all righ with that.)
fuck omaha. is this where we have gottn ourselves. geez.
It breaks my heart that this pseudo-fad has now spread to KC. People in Los Angeles have been raving about cupcakes for the last year,
despite any logic to this trend. It’s cake in a CUP, for crying out loud! Where’s the novelty in that?
As a reluctant LA transplant, I always think, “At least people in KC wouldn’t be naive enough to follow this.” Wrong on the Ugg boots disaster/trend and now wrong on the cupcakes.
I think I’ll look into buying “Mrs. Fields” stocks in preparation for the big COOKIE trend…
Snack attack, motherf***er!!!!!
Do we really think that REI will make a presence in Kansas City? REI offers everything that KC isn’t! We can’t even get more than one Whole Foods, a Jamba Juice, or any of the more progressive retail establishments that other cities have. I still think that KC looks and feels like Omaha, only a bit bigger.
what’s this about a ‘rumored’ IKEA? when and where did you hear this??? i think it’s an abomination that salt lake city would get an IKEA before us! and what’s up with trader joe’s having THREE stores in the st. louis area and none here! i’m beginning to take it personally, on behalf of KC, that is …
Very Very nice information here… Thanks
What does it matter if it’s “trendy” or if “hipsters” do it? A good cupcake is a good cupcake, and if someone has some I want them!
And for the person who asked what’s the big deal, it’s just a cake in a cup.. it’s more than that. It’s convenience and efficiency. A cake is too much for one person, and cupcakes are less messy than eating a slice of cake. They’re perfect for selfish indulgence!
