Local TV notices Mayor Barnes’ uncomfortable situation of pushing for a tax increase she can’t vote for… (hat-tip to Tony for noticing the story)
KSHB-TV 41: Barnes can not vote for stadium tax.
Note – we aren’t necessarily opposed to Mayor Barnes lobbying for this tax, since most of her constituents in KCMO also live in Jackson County. But is one of those weird only-in-KC situations, like all those JO cars with Mizzou stickers.

@BlogKC
Why would anyone be surprised? The KC Star will absolutely report NOTHING that isn’t favorable to this scam. Bloggers and some radio personalities are the only ones telling the truth on it. Did anyone see Yael’s column yesterday, where he basically attacked Kietzman’s motives, yet limited his comments on Kathryn Shields and her dubious motives? Since Yael loves any and all taxes and lives out by the stadiums, he can’t be taken seriously.
Even more telling in Yael’s column is how he questioned the motives of Keitzman, yet saw nothing wrong with Steve Glorioso’s “straight forward” tactics.
I guess I would think most journalists might have a problem with a staffer for the Mayor (even in a ‘consultant’ role) taking active roles in campaigns. Of course, maybe Yael became buddies with Steve back in their days on Ruckus, or maybe he’s just scared sh*tless of criticizing Steve, since he has seen what happens when you do.
I completely agree X2. Aside from Yael’s hero worship of Steve and Kathryn (no ethical questions asked), I mostly enjoyed his assertion that a downtown stadium for the Royals is too costly. HUH??? After telling us to quit whining and pay up, suddenly the Star and it’s henchmen care about us and our money. Sniff…very heart-warming indeed. Yael’s reasoning (if you care to toss out his mixed motives regarding his own neighborhood) remind me of my grandfather, who would buy a top-of-the-line Cadillac, then only get an AM radio installed to “save money.”
I don’t know why anyone is shocked or surprised the KC Star acts as a cheerleader for any half-assed development at taxpayer expense. The minute the Star received tax abatements for their printing facilities it’s coverage of city government became downright chummy.
Check out http://www.savekc.com, I will probably need some help with the news section. We need to get the people out there informed by something other than the monopoly we call the Star. Thanks.
I, for one as a resident of Jackson County, would be willing to sell the damn things to Kansas City. I would like to share the love with the other counties that are a part of our great city. I would like to have our council members reach deeeep into city coffers and come up with the cash to keep the teams here. I know of scads of people who moved to Kansas City BECAUSE OF OUR MAJOR LEAGE TEAMS. I like being on the receiving end of our football team’s generosity, such as that kind threat to bail out if we do not accede to their demands.
What’s the deal at the Star? Everyday we see a different columnist touting the stadiums, like they hand out the stadium duty to a different person each day…”Okay Bob, your turn to write pro-stadium drivel.” What warms my heart is that they are yet to print any poll info, which leads me to think the news ain’t good for them, and also that people take the endorsements of this rag very lightly: see most local, state, national elections. It certainly looks like either there isn’t that “diversity of thought” that the Star’s Op-Ed board claims anytime it’s attacked or opinions are being dictated. I notice many columnists keeping mum, and I wonder if my mother’s rule of “If you can’t say anything nice, say nothing” is in effect.
