Homicide stats
March 28, 2006 | 7 Comments
Greg Reeves has been crunching more numbers at Crime Scene KC. This time it is KCPD’s homicide stats for the last 11 years. This is the kind of reporting that the police department itself should be making public, but at least someone is doing it…

hmmm…. Providing these statistics to Greg Reeves is not public reporting? As for crunching numbers, Greg has only scratched the surface of what the data could reveal. It takes more than a series of sorts in an Excell spreadsheet to gain much relevance from the information.
William,
Greg is still providing more user-friendly info than the KCPD’s raw data tables…
He could do better.
He posted the Excel files, so if you want a better product then start your own blog and do the work yourself.
I would but I’m not the one getting payed to do that kind of analysis. One would think that the Star employs Mr. Reeves because of his insight into the subject. Yet, all he does is dump raw material and the most rudimentary analysis into the blogosphere.
Have you read the comments his postings engender? It doesn’t appear that Mr. Reeves’ efforts have attracted much than the snide and ignorant. His blog is an incredible disappointment and an embarrassment to the Star and this community.
The KCPD releases crime statistics every 6 weeks. These are open to the public and made available to all media outlets. An annual report is released each fiscal year, detailing every aspect of crime and departmental expenses, and that is filed at your library. If you are not getting the information, then your gripe is with your media outlet. The police can only release information, they do not have the ability to deliver it to you.
Thanks for that point, Ben. With Greg Reeves’ access to this information and the resources of the Star, who better to do the analysis? I can’t claim a Pulitzer. Greg’s bio credits him with one for his database analysis. Yet he seems more interested in the salaciousness of Lady Sage.
