KCADC backing Mel Solomon?

March 15, 2006 |

The Flogging of America blog has uncovered an interesting tidbit.   It seems that 4th District City Council candidate Mel Solomon’s web site is registered to the KC Area Development Council.  These are the Think KC folks, the metro-wide economic development group that focuses on bringing new investment and business to the region.  However, we’re surprised that they would be so closely associated with a certain candidate.  Anyone remember if the KCADC has a history of endorsing political candidates?

The Flogging of America web site also tackles the “Is this legal?” question. Non-profits aren’t allowed to dabble in politics so directly.

What’s Mel Solomon’s relationship with KCADC? It doesn’t look like he’s on the Board or an employee.

Yes, non-profis are allowed to participate in politics, depending on how they incorporate under tax law. They can have both a tax-deductible foundation and non-deductable political organization. It’s really just semantics, since these groups usually share the same board of directors and employees.

Assuming the KCADC has the correct IRS status, it’s very legal.

I agree it’s semantics. But don’t the political organizations of most non-profits at least change their name a little so there isn’t the appearance of impropriety? At first glance it looks like a non-profit economic development group has not only endorsed but is actively and materially supporting his candidacy. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know. But it’s a fair interpretation that KCADC is.

Maybe it’s just sloppiness. It’s not a smart move on the part of either Solomon or KCADC. If Solomon loses, will his opponent (if he has one) be willing to work with KCADC?

There are a lot of questions that I have regarding this subject, unfortunately, blogging is just a hobby and I don’t have the resources or time to investigate this further.

Thanks for picking up the torch, now hopefully it will be handed off to someone who can answer some of the questions.

I would like to clear up the confusion around the Mel Solomon website and KCADC. The Kansas City Area Development Council has nothing to do with Mr. Solomon’s election campaign. KCADC as an organization must be and is politically neutral.

As a personal friend of Mel, I helped him reserve a web site name on Register.com . . . when i logged in to my account to do it, i failed to realize that my work address was listed under my user name and not my personal address. The result was a listing of KCADC, my employer, as the registrant of the web site name. I apologize for this oversight.

I have immediately transferred the registrant name from KCADC to Mel Solomon. This should take effect in the next 2 days.

    Respectfully,
    Jonathan Knecht
