Tops in Meth

March 26, 2006 |

Crime Scene KC reports the only slightly surprising, Missouri is tops in terms of percentage of households with meth labs. 0.54% of all Missouri homes have been busted for housing a meth lab. While California actually has more labs, our lower popoulation boosts our per capit rank. Kansans aren’t far behind, ranking a strong #3.

Within the state, those labs tend to be found in the exurbs and other rural areas surrounding the metro areas. Here’s a handy map of meth lab busts.

While I applaud Greg Reeves’ posting of the report from which he gets his numbers, he unfortunately has perpetrated a fallacious assumption. While MO may have topped the nation in meth LAB seizures on a per capita basis. It is worth pointing out that not all meth labs are households. Not all meth households are labs. Greg’s “analysis” ignores the various differences in law, enforcement, and expenditure from state to state. That was, in part, the point of the report.

I will say this, the reason Missouri is leading is because rehabilitation for addicts is typically a last option.

My husband is an IV meth addict, currently incarcerated at WMCC. I was afraid he was going to die in my home, so I called the police as a last resort. When they came, he handed over the dope and asked for help.

What the court system is trying to do now is simply throw him away, another statistic, 6 years for meth posession.

In most cases, doing this, will do nothing in the fight against meth. The addict is released and will make it a priority to score another hit. The cycle starts all over.
