Ms. PAC-mad

May 13, 2006 |

Ms. Pac-ManJulia Irene Kauffman really has her panties in a twist this month. She’s upset that the city appears set to approve two high-rise condo towers in the Crossroads District, just south of her illusory performing arts center. Supposedly she has an agreement with city to keep the Crossroads low density in order to protect views to and from the proposed PAC.

While protecting view corridors is certainly important, the city also has to weigh the benefits of real developers ready to build vs. an heiress and her boyfriend who have been fumbling the PAC project from day one. One thing Kauffman is right about is that making one exception will lead to dozens of others. History shows us that as soon as the city gives one developer special treatment they will be unable to resist all other demands.

The Star: Arts center backers angered.
